I thought everyone would want to know about Rick.
When we were in San Francisco last week there was an article about Rick on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle. Rick has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Greghis's disease) and has a very aggressive form. He has had it for at least a year but wan't offically diagnosed until June, at this time he only has months to live.

As I understand, Rick has been working to find a cure for ALS for years. I considered Rick a good friend in high school. Hope he will be with us for a long time.

In my opinion, it's a fungus. (or caused by mycotoxins).

The March 28th issue of People magazine has a three page article about Rick and his family.

Yes Rick is very very sick. Joyce Anderson Buckner & Laura Hill Cantrell are sending out a letter to the class so that we can all make a donation in honor of Rick. Rick was working on a cure for the ALS and he is letting the research use different meds on him. He has been in a electric wheelchair since July 04 & they wound out he had ALS in Nov 03.RIck has one of the most aggressive cases the center where he worked has ever seen.

After reading the posts about Rick this weekend I was totally bummed. But thank God for somone like him who is trying to make a difference and to contribute to humanity to the very end and beyond. By coincidence, I turned on the last few minutes of the CBS news tonight and there was a story about Rick, his disease, the irony of his getting the disease when he has been studying it and working with patients who have it, and an interview with him and his wife. He can barely speak now. He still has that great smile. I went to CBSnews.com when I got home and saw the full story online. Peggy Johnson Falk

I'd like to thank Laura and Joyce for giving all of us a chance to find out about the chance to be involved. I had a couple of patients when I still worked in the field who had ALS. Never saw one who wasn't wonderful and a great patient even when they had so much to go through. My thoughts and prayer go out to Rick and his family. Thanks again to everyone for keeping us up on Rick.

Hi, everyone! I heard from my UCSF contact who helped us get the "Class of 1965 Campaign for the Fund to Honor Dr. Richard Olney" organized. Donations are coming in! Thanks to everyone who has participated in our campaign. There is no question that we are sending a strong message to Rick that he has a LOT of friends in the Class of '65 and that we support the important ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) research and treatment he pioneered. If you didn't receive the letter we mailed in April, please e-mail me - I'll get one in the mail to you ASAP. Or, check out the Reunion News link - the info is there, too.
I'm so proud to be a member of the Class of '65 and can't wait to see everyone at the reunion July 22-23!
Go, Tigers! :-) Laura Hill Cantrell
