Who remembers the "Bowl" at Washington Grade School? It was a sad day when I discovered that it was missing! Remember playing down there at recess? Remember when it snowed? Sliding down the hill on a giant piece of cardboard? And the giant tree roots? I can't believe it's gone now I just KNOW all you Washington graduates remember. Don't you think it should be added to the Memories page? C'mon, Ronny! And Judy? And Karla? And many, many others! And let me know if my Smiley face worked, Ronny. Except it's not supposed to be smiling!

Oh Carolyn, your cry face worked and it's zactly what's needed with that note. I can't tell you how devastated i was when i saw the "bowl" filled in or whatever they did to it. Mostly I remember playing capture the flag down there. It was like a secret land. Cardboard big enuff to slide down the hills was a thing to be treasured. Summer sliding on the grass and the occasional winter snow was priceless. The tree roots gave the whole place a Tolkien-esq feel to the place. I remember Mrs. Fleming taking us down there in the fall and we would draw the changing leaves. I never ran as fast as I did down the hills and into the "bowl." That memory makes me ;D . Thanks for coming up with that one. Always wondered if that place was as magical to others as it was to me. Seems i remember "making out" with a couple of cute girls down there occasionally but we won't go there........cause we can't!

What about: The trick shop in the SW corner of the Sooner Theater. Roller skating in the armory across from the train station. Zestee ice cream just north of Lindsey and Classen. The ice dock on Porter. Greenleaf bakery on Classen.

Don, is Zestee correct ? That's my old stomping grounds. Across from where Monty Brown lived. Seems like it was called something else, but maybe that's right, anyway, I bet Cate would remember.
I do remember the birchums who ran greenleaf market.
Wonder what happened to their son that was about 4 years younger than us.

Who could ever forget the "bowl". All of us from Washington spent a lot of time there during school and weekends. Sorry I'm just replying. My computers been very sick but my son fixed it well enough to do enternet for now at least.(A he put it,it's pretty much a good paper weight now). I also remember the "basketball court" at Washington. We used to have to square dance out there. I also remember that whether we were in the "bowl" or where ever,we ALWAYS could hear Ms Olander when she called us back from recess.

Hi, Y'all:
I must intrude on the reminiscing (is that a word?...I wish I could check with Nellie Childs) of the Washington School clique, but I must say I you're very lucky to have those sharp, clear memories of your elementary school experiences and the people you went to school with from kindergarten to 12th grade. That's pretty awesome, I think.
I was born and lived in Norman until I was five, then moved around until seventh grade when I came back to live at 309 W. Tonhawa (a couple of blocks north of McCall's Grocery) and started school at Central Jr. High. I guess I didn't realize any of you had a life before I came. I feel sort of cheated on! I had no idea you had a life before me.
Really, though, I enjoyed knowing all of you and I wouldn't take a kazillion dollars for my the memories of acquaintances, friends, and significant relationships I had with each of you who wrote here.
Carolyn, I remember your pretty blond hair as you played the flute in the Central Jr. High band. I'm pretty sure you played the flute, didn't you? I know Royce played the Sousaphone. Right? (I'm cheating. I'm looking at a picture of our band in the 7th grade with Harry Haines as the Band Director!)
Buff, I know you were a Lincoln School guy and, then, you didn't go to Central because you went to Uni High right? Anyway, I didn't meet you until NHS (I think.) Hmmm, the memories are getting fuzzy. Give me a break...I'm 58!!! I really enjoyed hooking up with you to play rock 'n' roll with the Hampton Rogues. You were the most talented of the group, but the time I was playing with you represents a major milestone in my life as I met my wife to be during her audition for our band. We're still married 37 years later! I'm really glad you went on to play with Huey Lewis and the News!
I assume Ronnie, is Ronnie Bagby. Reading your prose, I must believe that Bagby is the author! Bagby, I didn't play in the band at NHS but I know you played Coronet (maybe Trumpet...the picture is a little fuzzy.) As I recall, there were more Coronet players than Trumpet players) Anyway, Bagby I know I stopped by to see you one time in Empire, CO but you weren't home. Are you still there?
Don, I'm sorry to say I didn't really know you well in high school, but I certainly knew who you were. You were a track athlete and an excellent student. Regretably (for me), I wasn't as dedicated to my school work as you and I missed associating with the more studious members of our class. Nevertherless, I took note of you and your accomplishments. I hope to see you at our reunion.
Judy, I definitely remember you from NHS. I'm pretty sure you were a Central kid, too. I know we had classes together. Right? I know you were in Chorus and Speech at NHS with Mabel Ritzman, right? Like, Don, I wish I had known you better.
Anyway, I hope you are all planning on attending the 40th reunion. I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you there.
Now, one more memory: how about having ice cream on a hot, summer night at the Gilt Edge Dairy on Porter? Huh? Does anyone remember that? Yeah, the guy who came in the 7th grade remembers!!!

Tim, of course I remember the ice cream store at Gilt Edge. I can't remember when they closed it but I know that it was a sad day when that happened. It was a great place to go to get ice cream. In fact besides the Dairy Queen or maybe the Tasty Freeze was about the only place to get ice cream back then best I can remember. It was great seeing everyone who made it last night!

Tim and Fred, I've just been reading the memories messages to my husband (Sam LeFlore) and he said it was Zesto. Does that sound familiar? Thank you all for the memories, they're fun to read and remember. I especially enjoyed seeing all the McKinley classmates at this reunion. I hope to see some of the pics of the groups from the different grade schools soon.

Yes a lincoln lion, LOL but atually, Tim, I never went to Uni-High. I went to West in the seventh grade, Central in the eighth grade then went to private school (Lawrenceville in New jersey) for 2 years then finished Junior and Senior years at NHS.
